Iceland in April is more compelling for the spring landscape (waterfalls at full flow, migrating birds arriving, the coast ice-free) than for aurora. If you want to visit Iceland in April, go for the scenery and treat any aurora as a bonus rather than a primary objective.
Timing an April Aurora Trip for Maximum Effect
The timing window within April that offers the best aurora probability is April 1–14. Within this window, aim for the first week of April (April 1–7) to catch maximum post-equinox geomagnetic residual with the most darkness hours remaining. April 5–10 is a commonly recommended window by aurora tour operators who manage the transition from peak season to season close.
