Northern Lights in Luosto, Finland

Luosto is a small, peaceful fell resort tucked between Luostotunturi and Ukko-Luosto fells in central Finnish Lapland, about 25 km south of Sodankylä. With a permanent population of just a few hundred and limited resort development, Luosto offers an intimate Lapland experience far from the crowds of larger resorts like Levi.

What makes Luosto unique is the Lampivaara Amethyst Mine on the fell above the resort - Europe's only active amethyst mine open to visitors. Guests can dig for their own amethysts and keep one as a souvenir. This geological treasure adds a distinctive cultural dimension to your aurora trip.

Luostotunturi Fell Summit: A ski lift or snowshoe hike takes you above the tree line for panoramic views. The open fell top provides unobstructed 360-degree sky views. On clear nights, the aurora can stretch from horizon to horizon.

Aurora Chalet Luosto: A dedicated aurora accommodation with glass-roofed chalets positioned in the dark forest surrounding the resort. The chalets offer heated viewing from bed.

Frozen Luostojärvi Lake: The small lake adjacent to the resort freezes solid in winter, providing an open viewing platform. The forest-ringed lake creates a natural dark-sky amphitheater.

Amethyst Mine Road: The road ascending the fell toward the mine passes through open terrain above the tree line. Several viewpoints along the way offer excellent elevated aurora viewing.

Luosto's aurora season runs from September through March:

September-October: Autumn brings ruska colors and the amethyst mine's last open weeks (check seasonal dates). Dark nights return for aurora viewing. A peaceful, uncrowded period.

November-January: Deep winter with maximum darkness. Skiing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing provide daytime activities. The mine may be accessible by snowmobile tour. Aurora viewing hours are maximized.

Getting There: Sodankylä is the nearest town (25 km north). Fly to Rovaniemi Airport (RVN, 2.5 hours drive) or Ivalo Airport (IVL, 2 hours). Some tour operators arrange transfers from Rovaniemi.

Amethyst Mine: The Lampivaara Amethyst Mine is open to visitors in summer and winter seasons. In winter, access is typically by snowmobile or snowshoe. Visitors can dig for amethysts and keep one under a certain size. The experience takes about 2-3 hours including transport. Book through the Luosto tourist office.

Accommodation: Lapland Hotel Luostotunturi is the main hotel. Aurora Chalet Luosto offers glass-roofed cabins. Several cabin accommodations are available through rental agencies. The resort is small, so booking ahead is essential.
