Northern Lights in Hofn, Iceland

Hofn (pronounced "Hup") is a small fishing town of about 2,200 people in southeast Iceland, sitting in the shadow of Vatnajokull - Europe's largest glacier. The town itself is modest, known primarily for its exceptional langoustine (lobster) and as the gateway to some of Iceland's most spectacular landscapes, including the famous Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon.

For aurora viewing, the Hofn area offers something truly unique: icebergs as foreground. At Jokulsarlon lagoon (about 80 km west of Hofn), the aurora dances above floating icebergs calved from the Breidamerkurjokull glacier tongue. At the nearby Diamond Beach, chunks of crystal-clear ice wash up on black sand, creating foregrounds that gleam under aurora light. These scenes are genuinely unmatched anywhere else in the world.

Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon: Iceland's crown jewel for aurora photography. The lagoon is filled with icebergs of various sizes, some glowing blue, reflecting the aurora above. The combination of ice, water, and lights is magical. Located about 80 km (1 hour) west of Hofn. The visitor parking area provides easy access.

Diamond Beach: Directly across the road from Jokulsarlon, chunks of glacier ice wash onto the black sand beach. The clear ice catches and refracts aurora light, creating dazzling displays of color. Each piece of ice is unique, and new ones arrive with every tide.

Fjallsarlon Lagoon: A smaller, less-visited glacier lagoon just 10 km west of Jokulsarlon. Often offering more solitude, Fjallsarlon provides a more intimate ice-and-aurora experience with the glacier face dramatically close.

Hofn Harbor: The town harbor with fishing boats and views toward Vatnajokull offers a pleasant if less dramatic aurora experience. The mountain backdrop and harbor lights create a cozy foreground for moderate displays.

Stokksnes/Vestrahorn: About 15 minutes east of Hofn, the dramatic Vestrahorn mountain rises from a black sand beach. Aurora above this striking peak with sand dune reflections is extraordinary. Access requires a small entry fee paid at the Viking Village (cafe).

The aurora season around Hofn runs from September through March:

September-October: The glacier lagoons are at their most active as summer melt produces maximum iceberg calving. Aurora viewing begins with dark nights returning. The combination of active ice and early aurora creates spectacular scenes. Temperatures 3°C to -2°C.

November-January: The icebergs freeze partially in the lagoon, creating interesting ice formations. Deep winter darkness maximizes aurora viewing hours. The southeast coast is one of Iceland's wettest regions, so patience with weather is essential. When clear, the views are extraordinary.

February-March: Improving weather with more clear-sky periods. The ice in the lagoons begins to shift and crack as temperatures rise slightly. The February and March equinox periods often bring enhanced geomagnetic activity, increasing aurora chances.

Getting There: Hofn Airport (HFN) has limited flights from Reykjavik. Most visitors drive Route 1 from Reykjavik (approximately 5-6 hours) or from Vik (about 3.5 hours). The drive along the south coast is one of Iceland's most scenic routes. A 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended in winter.

Road Conditions: The stretch of Route 1 between Vik and Hofn passes through exposed highland terrain and several single-lane bridges. Winter conditions can be challenging with ice, wind, and reduced visibility. Always check road.is and never drive in a storm.

Accommodation: Hotel Hofn is the main option in town. Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon sits near Jokulsarlon (useful for early morning and late night lagoon visits). Guesthouses and Airbnb options are available. Book ahead as options are limited.

Langoustine: Hofn is Iceland's langoustine capital. Every restaurant in town serves this local delicacy in various preparations. Don't miss it - the Humarhofnin restaurant is a standout. The annual Lobster Festival (Humarhátíð) takes place each June.
