Gallivare: Authentic Lapland Aurora

Gällivare is a mining town of about 18,000 people in Swedish Lapland, about 100 km southeast of Kiruna. The town exists due to the LKAB iron ore mining operations (similar to Kiruna) and retains a working-class, authentic Arctic character that contrasts with the more tourist-oriented destinations further west.

At 67.13°N, Gällivare needs a KP index of 2 for aurora viewing. The town is surrounded by vast boreal forest and sits near Dundret, a fell that provides elevated viewpoints. The town's relatively modest tourism infrastructure means fewer visitors and more genuine local interaction. Check the aurora forecast for your visit.

Aurora Viewing in Gallivare

Dundret: A 823-meter fell just south of town, offering panoramic views over the Lapland forest. In summer it's famous for midnight sun viewing; in winter, the same platform serves aurora watching. The Dundret Resort provides accommodation near the summit.

Malmberget: The adjacent mining community and its surrounding terrain offer dark-sky viewing with the mine's industrial landscape as an unusual foreground.

Forest Roads South: Driving south from Gällivare, the forest roads provide numerous pull-offs with dark-sky conditions and forest-framed aurora views.

Vassara River: The frozen river south of town provides an open viewing corridor through the forest.

When to Visit Gallivare

Aurora season runs September through March. February-March typically offers the best clear-sky conditions combined with returning daylight for exploration. See our timing guide.

Getting to Gallivare

Getting There: Gällivare Airport (GEV) has limited service. Most visitors fly to Kiruna (KRN, 1.5 hours drive) or take the train from Stockholm (the same line that serves Kiruna, stopping at Gällivare first). Bus connections from Kiruna operate regularly.

Accommodation: Quality Hotel Lapland is the main hotel. Dundret Resort offers fell-side accommodation. Several guesthouses and cabin options are available. Accommodation is generally more affordable than Kiruna or Abisko.

Mine Tours: LKAB offers mine tours similar to those in Kiruna, providing insight into the iron ore industry that sustains these Arctic communities. The Malmberget mine visit center explains the mining process and its impact on the landscape.

Getting to Gallivare

Aurora trips need three things booked together: a flight into the right airport, somewhere dark to stay, and usually a car, because the sky you get is the sky above wherever you can drive to that night.
