Trips to the North Pole
You can get to 90°N, by icebreaker in summer or by ski plane in April, and it costs between 20,000 and 50,000 USD. What you will not get is the aurora, for two reasons that compound: the season is wrong and so, less obviously, is the latitude.
Can you actually visit the North Pole?
Yes. Unlike the South Pole, which sits on two miles of ice over rock, the North Pole is a point in a frozen ocean. There is no land, no building and nothing marking it. The ice drifts a few kilometres a day, so the position you stand at is only the pole for as long as you are standing there.
Two routes exist for ordinary travellers. Nuclear icebreakers sail from Murmansk in the northern summer and take about a fortnight to break through and return. Ski-equipped aircraft land on a prepared runway on the ice in April, staged through a temporary camp on the way. There is also the expensive option of a helicopter hop from that camp.
Both are real trips that ordinary people take, and both cost more than most holidays. What they do not offer is the aurora, and that is worth understanding before you spend the money.
Why you will not see the aurora at the North Pole
Two reasons, and they compound.
The season is wrong. Both routes run between April and August, because that is when the ice is workable and the weather survivable. That window is exactly when the Arctic has continuous daylight. At 90°N the sun stays above the horizon from late March to late September. No darkness, no aurora, regardless of geomagnetic activity.
The latitude is wrong too. This surprises people. The aurora forms a ring around the magnetic pole, not a cap over it, and the geographic North Pole sits well inside that ring. The middle of the ring is the polar cap, which is quieter than the oval around it. So even in a hypothetical dark polar winter you would be looking at the aurora on the horizon around you rather than overhead.
The best aurora latitudes are 65 to 70°N, roughly Tromsø, Fairbanks and Yellowknife. Going further north than that starts making things worse, not better. Svalbard at 78°N is the exception worth knowing: during intense storms the oval can push south of it, and you get the rare experience of aurora on the southern horizon.
What each route costs
Icebreaker, roughly 30,000 to 45,000 USD per person for a 13 to 14 day voyage from Murmansk. That includes everything on board, helicopter sightseeing over the ice, and usually a hot air balloon at the pole itself. It is the most reliable route, because a nuclear icebreaker does not get stopped by ice.
Ski-plane and camp, roughly 20,000 to 35,000 USD for a shorter trip staged through a temporary ice camp, typically a few days in April. Cheaper, faster, and much more weather-dependent, since a runway on drifting sea ice is a fragile thing.
Last-degree ski expedition, 50,000 USD and up. You fly to 89°N and ski the final degree of latitude over 7 to 10 days, hauling a sled. This is an expedition rather than a holiday.
For context, three nights in a glass cabin in Lapland with flights runs around 2,000 EUR and will very likely show you the aurora. The North Pole trip costs fifteen times that and definitively will not.
What to do instead if you want the aurora
If what you actually want is the far north and the aurora, the answer is Svalbard. It sits at 78°N, is reachable on a scheduled flight from Oslo or Tromsø, and has hotels. From mid November to late January the sun never rises, which gives you aurora-capable darkness in the middle of the day.
Svalbard also delivers the thing people are actually chasing when they picture the North Pole: pack ice, glaciers, polar bears and a genuine sense of being past the edge of things. You can dog sled, ride a snowmobile across a glacier, and be back in a warm room the same evening.
If the pole itself is the goal, keep them as separate trips. Go to Svalbard or Lapland in winter for the aurora, and take the icebreaker in summer for the pole. Trying to combine them is the one thing that cannot work.
